Long-standing international partner awarded an honorary doctorate at DTU

Professor Michiel Kleerebezem is among the world’s leading researchers in the gut microbiome and the role of microorganisms in food and health. His work spans from fundamental studies of microbial physiology to the development of fermentation processes and probiotics, with implications for both food quality and human health.

His collaboration with DTU extends over more than 15 years. For the institute’s director, Tine Rask Licht, it began in 2010, when he served as examiner for her first PhD student. Since then, he has been a recurring research partner and a valued sparring partner for colleagues across the institute.

In addition to his scientific contributions, he is widely recognised for his open and generous approach to collaboration. He brings together disciplines and translates biological insight into knowledge with practical relevance.

The honorary doctorate recognises both his scientific achievements and his sustained commitment to international collaboration. It also further strengthens the ties between DTU and Wageningen University & Research.
