Summer school with a focus on entrepreneurship

Food, fish and agriculture Food production

A summer school at the Technical University of Denmark will equip budding food entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools to develop an idea for a new food business and to write a business plan.

For the eighth year in a row the Technical University of Denmark, DTU, will give budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to spend three weeks of the summer holidays learning how to develop a business plan for an innovative food product or a new technology.

The popular three-week course is being offered by the National Food Institute. During the course, the students are introduced to a number of business cases from the food industry, and they will learn how to establish and create growth in a company.

The summer school is aimed at students who are pursuing a relevant degree at a university as well as people who are already working in the industry but want new knowledge and inspiration in relation to the commercialization of technologies and innovative ideas.

Learning from the experts

Participation in the course makes entrepreneurial spirits better equipped to foresee the challenges that are associated with starting a business. For participants who have no immediate plans of starting their own business, the course makes them more well equipped to be hired into companies because they learn to understand the entire workflow of a company.

Many of the lectures will be given by representatives from a number of different food companies—ranging from multinational corporations to start-ups and investment companies. This gives the participants the opportunity to meet people who, by virtue of their own experience of running a business, can inspire and inform them about the process of starting their own business as well as people they might want to work for in the future.

Evening classes on offer in the autumn

The course, which is called "23531 Entrepreneurship in Food and Bio Engineering", will also be available when DTU starts offering classes during the evening from the autumn of 2019 as part of a new initiative.

By offering the course outside normal working hours, the National Food Institute hopes to make it attractive also for those who are already employed by a company, but who want to gain a better understanding of bringing a new product to the market.

The course will take place in the new building 202, where the canteen will stay open in the evening, so that students have the opportunity to get something to eat and drink.
