Web development for data visualization and knowledge dissemination, frontend, backend, full stack.

DTU Food, the Division for Global Surveillance, are hiring two student assistants, who will work together on developing our web interfaces and applications, where we as a research group will be visualising our data, disseminating our research, and be developing interactive online environments for the user to explore the data and perform their own analyses.  

The job 
At the research group for Genomic Epidemiology we run a variety of health-related research projects, and we wish to make web-based data visualisation, and data-interaction for the reader, a common part of our knowledge dissemination activities. For this purpose, we are seeking two student assistants, both with a full stack web development background. You will be hired with the intention of creating a team, one of you with main focus on frontend development including design and user experience, the other with main focus on backend development. Your areas of responsibility will be overlapping, as you will be working side by side on the same projects, with the goal of creating the necessary synergy in order to efficiently design and develop interfaces and analysis-environments, covering everything included in development and execution of such projects. 

Specific tasks that you will be asked to undertake include:    

  • Wireframe and UI/UX design in collaboration with the responsible researchers  
  • Identification of project feasibility and limitations for proper execution
  • Identification of required infrastructures, platforms and technologies
  • Development of frontend, visualisations, APIs, back-services
  • Deployment of developed web applications
  • Database administration 

Our expectations of you
We expect you to be a student and to have the following skills/knowledge of the following areas:  

Front-end

  • Git 
  • UX Design tool (e.g. Figma, Adobe XD, ect. ) and understanding of UX fundamentals 
  • HTML & CSS 
  • JavaScript (ECMAScript 2017 and newer) 
  • Frontend framework (React or Vue)
  • JavaScript data visualisation library (e.g. D3.js) 

Back-end

  • Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals 
  • Git
  • Python
  • Flask
  • SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • REST
  • Basics of Linux server administration (bash, ssh, etc. ) 
  • Unit testing 

Furthermore, it will be considered a strength if you also know: 

  • Docker
  • MongoDB
  • Continuous delivery pipeline
  • Next.js
  • Jupyter Lab
  • Functional testing e.g. Selenium
  • Headless cms 

We also expect strong communication skills, especially in relation to aligning expectations with regards to project design and execution, not only in relation to the researchers responsible for the different research projects, but also internally in your team.

Salary and appointment terms 
Salary and appointment terms are in accordance with the LC/CO10-collective agreement and the organizational agreement for IT employees (PROSA) in the service of the state or another relevant collective agreement affiliation.

You will be working between 8 to 15 hours pr. week.

The workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus.
