DTU Food is looking for a postdoc for a 2-years position with focus on post-harvest processing of commercially cultivated seaweeds. This includes reduction of potential toxic elements as well as retention of wanted compounds such as vitamins and polysaccharides.

As our new colleague you will be working in the Research Group on Bioactives – Analysis and Application at the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food). One of the focus areas of the group is investigation the potential of utilizing seaweeds as food or food ingredients. You will be part of a dynamic team with high international visibility, many research collaborations with leading international universities and organisations and a successful track record of national and international research projects.

Responsibilities and qualifications
A major part of your activities will be associated with the ongoing project Sustainable Ingredients From Cultivated Kelp to the Food Industry (SusKelpFood) in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen (IMR). You will take a leading role in the organization and implementation of the SusKelpFood work at DTU. The research activities will take place at DTU, IMR and yearly fieldwork at industrial processing facilities and kelp cultivation sites, therefore you must be time flexible.

The position involves participation in laboratory work such as analysis of potential toxic elements, monosaccharides and vitamins as well as design of experiments and coordination of samples from various stakeholders in the project. In addition, you will participate in the supervision of younger students and in the project coordination of SusKelpFood both internally at DTU and with other project partners located in Norway. The candidate may also be involved in other research activities within the research field of the group.

You as a candidate have excellent qualifications within the following areas:

  • Hydrothermal processing of foods or bio products
  • Chemical analysis, preferably monosaccharide analysis and/or analysis of potential toxic elements
  • Cost effective experimental design, chemometrics and statistics
  • Dissemination of scientific results to peers, industry, food authorities, and general popular science

You have a background in Food technology, or Biotechnology, as well as experience of post-harvest processes of foods, preferably seaweeds. You have practical experience with experiments and sampling on industrial sites.

We expect that you are an efficient team worker, have great coordinating and communication skills and have a critical engineering mindset. Speaking a Scandinavian language is a plus.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years. The position is a full-time position. Starting date is 1st of March 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
