Research Activities
The AMELIORATE project adopts a One Health framework, recognizing that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are interconnected. Environmental contamination can affect food systems, animal health, and human communities simultaneously. By studying these systems together, the project develops comprehensive solutions that address environmental and public health challenges. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that scientific findings can support effective environmental management and public health policies.
The research is organized into five work packages.
Work Package 1
Animal Exposure
This work package investigates how animals are exposed to heavy metals and antimicrobial resistant bacteria through contaminated environments and waste systems. The research will examine exposure pathways and potential impacts on animal health and food safety.
Work Package 2
Human Exposure
This work package studies how people living or working near waste sites are exposed to hazardous substances. The research focuses on identifying exposure routes and assessing potential health risks associated with heavy metals and antimicrobial resistance.
Work Package 3
Environmental Pathways
This work package examines how contaminants move through environmental systems such as soil, water, and waste streams. Understanding these pathways is essential for identifying sources of contamination and potential intervention points.
Work Package 4
One Health Integration and Risk Assessment
This work package integrates environmental, human, and animal data to perform comprehensive risk assessments. The results will support decision-making processes and guide policy recommendations for sustainable waste management.
Work Package 5
Project Management, Dissemination and Public Impact
This work package ensures coordination of research activities and dissemination of project findings. Activities include project management, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and public communication.
