Presentations about how novel food gets approved

Food, fish and agriculture
On 24 March, 45 people from companies and other interested parties were gathered to a theme day on novel food where they learned about when a new food is novel food, how an EU approval takes place and what a good application can look like. See the presentations.

Food that was not used for human consumption to a significant degree within the EU before 15 May 1997, can be described as novel food - e.g., chia seeds, seaweed, or insects. Representatives from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and DTU National Food Institute talked about that and much more on a theme day on novel food 24 March 2022.

The participants learned about when a new food is novel food, how an EU approval proceeds and what a good application can look like. They also learned how a safety assessment takes place, saw examples on novel food approval and much more.
