PhD defence on the topic of alternative fuel production

The National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, invites you to Johan Alftrén’s PhD defence on development of methods to produce alternative fuels. The defence will take place on Monday, 7 April 2014, at 1.30 pm.

In his PhD project Johan Alftrén from the National Food Institute studied methods to reduce costs for developing more environmentally sustainable options to the petroleum-based fuels and chemicals. Lignocellulosic biomass is a very interesting raw material for producing biochemicals and biofuels because of the great abundance of the raw material. In addition, it is a waste material from e.g. maize and wheat production and does not directly compete with food production.

One of the most significant challenges to making the bioprocess economically viable are the costs for cellulases. In his PhD project Johan Aftrén investigated whether a way to reduce costs for cellulases could be enzyme immobilisation on magnetic particles, enabling re-use of enzymes.
