European assessments of a GMO study

Several European institutions have evaluated the much spoken-about French study of the effect on rats’ consumption of genetically modified corn and the herbicide Roundup. All evaluations point towards the conclusion that the study does not comply with scientifically accepted standards.

The French study by Séralini and collaborators, ”Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize”, which was published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicologi, has been highly publicized in the media.
Several European organisations have evaluated the study, including the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark. The European Food Safety Authority bases its assessment on a number of the membership countries’ assessments and has drawn up the National Food Institute’s as well. All organisations are critical of the study and do not believe that it meets scientifically accepted standards, nor can be used to draw conclusions on either GMO or Roundup.
