Food chemistry research awarded

Professor Erik Huusfeldt Larsen from the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, has gained wide recognition for his food chemistry research, which in recent years has focused on nanomaterials. He has now received the Nordic Torch Award on Plasma Spectrochemistry.

Research professor Erik Huusfeldt Larsen has received the prestigious ‘Nordic Torch Award on Plasma Spectrochemistry’ at the sixth ‘Nordic Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry’. The motivation for the award is Erik Huusfeldt Larsen’s extensive and outstanding research within food chemistry based on the analysis technique ‘inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry’ (ICP-MS).

The award is given to Erik Huusfeldt Larsen's in response to 35 years of research in minerals and heavy metals in foods in relation to health and disease risks. His work has focused on developing and applying advanced chemical analysis methods for investigating mineral and heavy metal compounds occurring in food and humans. His advanced analysis methods have contributed to better understanding of their metabolic fate in both crop plants and humans.

Focus on nanomaterials

In recent years, research on nanomaterials has attracted particular attention due to their increasing technological application because nanomaterials can be biologically active and pose a potential risk to both human health and the environment.  

However, we still know far too little about the possible risks to assess the potential hazard of nanomaterials. Therefore the prize that was awarded in Loen in Norway is an important recognition that will help increase focus on research.
