DTU Food Pilot Plant

The DTU Food Pilot Plant is a greenhouse for innovation and forward-thinking. Its pilot-scale facilities include, among others, the DTU Brewery, which, like the rest of the DTU Food Pilot Plant, works to create value from all side streams in the food sector, thereby ensuring future sustainable food production. Students, staff, and industry professionals across disciplines experiment with new ideas in practice and carry out projects encompassing all stages of the chain, from raw material to finished product.

The DTU Food Pilot Plant can work from a laboratory scale to volumes of 1,000 litres, making the experiments relevant and scalable for the industry.

Its location at a university provides the freedom to explore fundamental principles in utilizing side streams, which may be commercially risky or not yet economically viable for the industry. Here, the focus is minimizing resource utilization in manufacturing and developing new sustainable processes and products.

The DTU Food Pilot Plant collaborates with small and large companies worldwide in all food industry sectors. The DTU Brewery at the DTU Food Pilot Plant is also part of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration's "smiley" scheme, which allows for the serving of beer at significant events, such as the People's Meeting on Bornholm.
