Chemical Exposure

On a daily basis we are exposed to numerous chemical substances from many different sources. When exposed to a mixture of numerous chemicals simultaneously, the mixture can have a significant negative effect even at low exposure levels. DTU National Food Institute researches the large number of potentially harmful chemical substances and assesses the consequences in regards to food safety with particular focus on endocrine disruptors, cocktail effects and the development of computer models that can predict the harmful effects.

An online tool from DTU calculates the risk of a mixture effect arising from people being exposed to several cocktails simultaneously that have similar harmful effects

Data scarcity challenges identification of endocrine disruptors

Lack of data from the chemical industry in the EU often prevents the assessment of whether substances, for example, used in consumer products, are endocrine disrupting. This is shown in a new study from DTU National Food Institute and the University of Southern Denmark. As a result, the researchers recommend updating the information requirements in the EU legislation, REACH. They also propose various approaches for evaluating chemical substances to ensure that all available information is fully utilized.
