The National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, has studied how Danes’ dietary habits have changed and mapped out nutrients in the diet for more than 30 years. Knowledge about nutrition and dietary habits is important in order to promote healthy eating and to prevent diet-related diseases.

To that end the institute conducts a wide range of studies into nutrients and other health-promoting substances in the diet, maintains data on food composition, conducts large-scale national surveys of Danes’ dietary habits, physical activity and overweight, and evaluate the impact of strategies that promote healthy dietary habits.

The knowledge generated by these activities is used e.g. by the authorities to draw up the official dietary recommendations, tailor health and nutritional information to the population and as a basis for fortification programmes for certain nutrients.

The National Food Institute's expertise in this area is also used to make it easier for people to live healthy by making tasty and healthier food more accessible in the workplace and in schools and childcare centres.
