On 20 November 2017, the Nils Foss Excellence Prize will be awarded to an internationally recognized researcher for achievement within food science innovation and research. The 2017 nominees for the prize are Professor Per Brockhoff, DTU Compute, and Professor Frank Møller Aarestrup, the National Food Institute at DTU.

Prize for internationally recognized research

The Nils Foss Excellence Prize was awarded for the first time last year. The award winner is an active and internationally recognized scientist with at least a decade of world-class innovative research to his name, leading to remarkable improvements in sustainability, quality, or safety in the food supply chain.

And the prize goes to.....a DTU researcher

With only two nominees left in the race for the EUR 100,000 prize, it is already clear that this year’s winner of the Nils Foss Excellence Prize is a DTU researcher. Headed by the Rector of the University of Copenhagen, the prize committee has nominated Per Brockhoff, DTU Compute, and Frank Aarestrup, the National Food Institute for the 2017 prize.

Two different approaches to food research

Both researchers have many recognized scientific articles, books, and contributions to their name—for the benefit of both Denmark and the international community. Their research-related approach to the food area does, however, differ considerably.

Based on the relationship between the use of antimicrobial agents for animals and the health consequences for humans, Frank Møller Aarestrup has been a driving force in the detection of the global spread of resistant bacteria and resistance genes. His research has had a decisive influence on how to use antimicrobial agents and control antibiotic-resistant bacteria all over the world.

Per Bruun Brockhoff works with statistical methods development and applications of statistical data analysis in both industrial and research contexts—with a special focus on the use of statistics and data analysis within the food industry and food research. He has positioned himself as an international expert in sensory (taste/smell/texture) data analysis.
