Special topic portal on risk-benefit assessments of food

Food, fish and agriculture Food safety Health-promoting compounds Health and diseases

A new special topic portal showcases the National Food Institute’s research within the area of risk-benefit assessments of food’s beneficial and harmful health effects.

Many foods contain valuable nutrients as well as compounds that may be harmful to health. Fish for example can be rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, but particularly larger predatory fish can also contain methylmercury, which is harmful to a growing fetus.

During the last decade, researchers from the National Food Institute have increasingly used quantitative methods to assess both the positive and negative health effects of foods and to determine whether a food is good or bad overall for people’s health.

Such calculations are called risk-benefit assessments.

The National Food Institute conducts research aimed at optimizing the methods that are used to carry out risk-benefit assessments. The National Food Institute has also initiated an international expert network, in which experts from around the world learn from each others’ experiences and competencies in using methods to conduct risk-benefit assessment in the area of food safety.
