The National Food Institute (DTU Food) offers a 3 years position as post doc in strategies for modulating the ecology of the intestine.

You will be part of the Research group for Microbes, Health and Allergy. We offer an ambitious, dynamic and sociable research environment with lots of exiting challenges and opportunities. 

The postdoctoral position is affiliated to the project MIMIO (Microstructures, microbiota and oral delivery) recently funded by the Synergy Programme under the Novo Nordic Foundation. This project is a cross-disciplinary effort involving two top research environments at DTU. The overall aim of the project is to combine nanotechnology, biotechnology and microbiology to develop and characterize nano- and microfabricated containers for targeted oral administration of microbes to the gut environment.

Your main task in the MIMIO project will be in vivo characterization and optimization of the effects of microcontainer-based delivery of selected mixtures of bacteria on the intestinal environment in mice.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will work in a multi-disciplinary team and will be responsible for establishment of a platform for investigation of microcontainer-based delivery of bacteria in an in vivo environment. Additionally, you will be involved in the daily supervision of two PhD students that will be affiliated to the same project. The work will involve:

  • As part of the research group for Microbes Health and Allergy to contribute to the overall activities and development of this group
  • Driving of the in vivo work required for establishment of a platform for development and testing of microcontainer-based delivery of bacteria to the gut environment.
  • Close interaction with two MIMIO PhD students as well as with researchers at DTU Nanotech, who will create the microcontainers
  • Development and application of innovative strategies for testing and optimization of delivery of intestinal microbial mixtures.
  • Application of mouse models and in situ visualization of containers and bacteria in the gut environment.  
  • Dissemination of methods and results in the form conference contributions and scientific publications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

We expect that you have a solid background in life science and intestinal microbial ecology. Required skills include:

  • Knowledge about intestinal bacterial communities 
  • Preferably experience with techniques for in situ visualization (histology and fluorescent probing and labelling) of microbes residing in the gut

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

Workplace and period of employment:

The workplace will be at the Life Science & Bioengineering building specifically designed to accommodate and facilitate our activities. The building is located at the DTU main campus in Kgs. Lyngby at the outskirt of Copenhagen.

The period of employment is 3 years. Anticipated starting date is May 1st.
