Senior researcher Alicja Mortensen at the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark has been reelected as chairman of the Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources Added to Food under the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA.
The European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, has selected the 21 experts who for the next three years will be members of the organisation’s scientific panel on food additives and nutrient sources deliberately added to foods. Members choose the panel chairman, and for a second time they have elected senior researcher at the National Food Institute, Alicja Mortensen.
As chairman Alicja Mortensen will lead the panel’s work in evaluating new food additives, nutrient sources and other substances deliberately added to food and in re-evaluating hundreds of food additives, which are currently authorised for use in foods, such as colourings, preservatives and emulators. The panel is midway through a re-evaluation of these substances. The re-evaluation is scheduled to be completed by 2020.
Alicja Mortensen's research expertise is in the field of diet and health, where she has studied how diet affects atherosclerosis and/or cancer in animal models of human diseases. Her extensive experience in risk assessment of chemicals makes her ideally suited to lead the panel.
EFSA has a total of ten scientific panels, which carry out risk assessments for the protection of consumers, animals and plants in the European Union. The panels advise EFSA in the form of scientific statements, which are published in the EFSA Journal – an open access, online publication. EFSA then advises the European Commission.
