The National Food Institute is also an important part of the national food safety contingency plan. The Institute provides services to Danish authorities in relation to urgent and/or serious incidents of social relevance.
The Institute maintains a professional, research-based contingency for quick and efficient handling of urgent food risk issues. This means that the Institute solves its tasks in a continuous interaction between ordinary research and practical preparation of specific, and in some cases, urgent contingency jobs.
As part of its contingency commitments, the National Food Institute operates laboratory facilities that have the capacity and equipment required to, e.g., analyse the incidence of chemical compounds in food. The National Food Institute also operates as a national reference laboratory within a number of areas.
The Danish Zoonosis under the National Food Institute is also involved in outbreak tracking in relation to the handling of zoonotic disease outbreaks.
