Health claims

Since EU Regulation 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims for foods entered into force, the EU Commission, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and national authorities have made extensive efforts to establish guidelines and criteria for health claims approval.

The National Food Institute advises the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration on the assessment of requirements for nutrients in food; which nutrients are relevant to claim and in what quantities, partly on the development of nutrient profiles and partly on the requirements for the scientific evidence for health claims.

The National Food Institute also assists the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration with interpreting EFSA scientific assessments when these are translated into concrete decisions for permission or refusal of health claims made by the European Commission.
